Rasmalai is one of my favorite sweet. I don't know why Halidram (a big brand in india for sweets and savories) chose this version. You can visit an Indian restaurant which has this dish on menu. Also, you can try a recipe available online, as I saw on your YouTube channel that you do cooking vlogs too. Also canned versions can never match the fresh ones, in any cuisine.
Hey Robert! Thank you for taking interest in Indian food.. Most people only know about curry when it come to indian food!
I would like to call what you ate "RasGulla" rather calling it "RasMalai".. I will explain why.. Firstly i would clarify Haldiram is a genuine company and a really good one too.. But when it comes to Indian food it is very diverse just like its culture. Same dish would taste different in North India than South India. Thus, when commercially prepared most western shore sell these product with either names- RasGulla or RasMalai.
THE DIFFERENCE: Ras (juice)+ Gulla (ball) Ras (juice)+ Malai (Milk/cream) For both juice is the sugar syrup and thus commercially prepared product always have excess of water and sugar base..
As mentioned by Neha above, these are best enjoyed when made fresh also one can control the amount if sugar to be added. Recipe wise RasMalai is more rich and less sweet. Good luck, keep enjoying food!
